As preventable illnesses continue to rise across Nigeria, residents have been urged to take their healthcare seriously. The call came from Mr. Emmanuel Agalivie, President of the Platinum Lions Club, District 404 A4, during a high-profile free medical screening organized for staff of the Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) in Asaba.
“This exercise is part of Lions Club International’s ongoing commitment to ensure our communities maintain sound health,” Mr. Agalivie told attendees. “We want to empower people to detect potential health risks early, before they become life-threatening.”
The free screening offered staff comprehensive health checks, including blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar level tests, and diabetes risk assessments. The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the rising prevalence of hypertension and diabetes in the region—conditions that local health experts warn are silently impacting thousands.
Dr. Louis Esenwa, speaking at the event, emphasized the urgent need for proactive health interventions. “We’re seeing an alarming increase in lifestyle-related illnesses,” he said. “Community screenings like this are vital—they save lives by catching these conditions early.”
Organizers also highlighted that the initiative is part of the district’s annual humanitarian budget, underscoring the Lions Club’s long-term commitment to public health. “This is just one of several projects designed to support the wellbeing of our communities,” said one speaker.
