The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of possible flash flooding in 13 states during the second dekad of August, covering August 11 to 20, 2026.
The weather agency identified Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Taraba, Cross River and Akwa Ibom as areas potentially vulnerable to flash flooding during the period.
NiMet said the outlook was based on factors including forecast rainfall intensity, prevailing soil moisture, drainage capacity, terrain and dam characteristics.
According to the agency, possible impacts include flooding in low-lying, urban and riverside communities, traffic congestion, road closures and transport disruptions. Heavy rainfall could also reduce visibility for motorists and affect aviation operations.
NiMet warned that waterlogging could damage farmlands, crops and livestock, while roads, bridges, drainage systems and other critical infrastructure could also be affected. It added that stagnant floodwaters could increase the risk of waterborne diseases.
The agency advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and be prepared to relocate to safer locations where necessary. It also urged the public to avoid walking or driving through flooded roads, bridges and fast-flowing water.
NiMet called on residents and authorities to keep drains, culverts and waterways clear, while emergency management agencies were advised to strengthen surveillance, pre-position response teams and maintain emergency preparedness.
Farmers were also advised to improve drainage on their farms and move livestock, machinery and harvested produce away from flood-prone areas.
The agency urged authorities to prioritise vulnerable communities for impact-based monitoring, public sensitisation and rapid dissemination of weather warnings.
NiMet stressed that preparedness should be maintained even in areas with lower flood probability, noting that flash flooding can develop rapidly during intense rainfall.
The agency encouraged Nigerians to rely on official weather forecasts and flood advisories as part of efforts to reduce the impact of extreme weather events.
