President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, ahead of the 17th BRICS Summit of Heads of State and Government, scheduled to hold from July 6 to 7.
The block includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, also called the BRICS.
The President’s flight touched down at the Galeao Air Force Base tarmac at 8:45 pm local time on Friday, where he was received by Colonel Juliana Barros, the Brazilian Foreign Liaison Officer.
He was accompanied by a delegation that included the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
President Tinubu who is one of only four African leaders invited to this year’s BRICS Summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the summit’s general debate.
Nigeria’s designation as a “partner country”, a rank above that of a guest nation, indicates the country’s expanding strategic relevance to the bloc, which now includes full African members like South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia.
