Wike launches radio station backing Tinubu’s re-election bid in southern Nigeria

Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has established a new radio station in Rivers State that is being used to support President Bola Tinubu’s anticipated 2027 re-election campaign.

The station, Majority FM 89.5, is located within the office of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, according to local media reports. Its launch comes amid growing political mobilisation across Nigeria’s South-South region, a key battleground in national elections.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a prominent political figure in the oil-rich Niger Delta, has emerged as one of President Tinubu’s most influential allies, despite longstanding political tensions in the state between rival parties.

Radio remains one of the most powerful communication tools in southern Nigeria, particularly in areas with limited access to digital media. Analysts say the establishment of a campaign-aligned station underscores how early and strategically political actors are positioning themselves ahead of the next general election, still two years away.

The development is likely to further shape political alignments in Rivers State, where local power struggles continue to play a central role in national politics.
