In a significant move reshaping the leadership of the 10th Senate’s standing committees, the Senate Selection Committee has announced several reconstitutions, signaling a fresh direction in legislative oversight. The announcement was made by Senate President and committee chairman, Godswill Akpabio, during Tuesday’s plenary session on the floor of the Red Chamber.
One of the most notable changes involves the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence. Senator Yahaya Abdullahi from Kebbi State has been appointed as the new chairman. Abdullahi takes over from his previous role as Chairman of the Committee on National Planning, marking a significant shift in responsibilities amid rising national security concerns.
Following this reshuffle, Senator Mustafa Musa from Yobe State has stepped into the role of Chairman of the Committee on National Planning, filling the position vacated by Abdullahi.
The reshuffle also touches the Senate Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry, now led by Senator Shehu Buba from Bauchi State, ensuring renewed focus on agricultural and livestock policy.
In another key appointment, the Senate Committee on Air Force will now be chaired by the Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu from Enugu State, in an acting capacity. Senator Ngwu previously served as deputy chairman of the committee, which had been under the leadership of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who is currently indisposed.
These strategic reassignments come at a critical time, as the nation grapples with growing security challenges and urgent developmental priorities. With new leadership at the helm, the Senate aims to strengthen oversight, enhance policy execution, and respond more effectively to the country’s pressing needs.
