Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has urged Asaba residents to stay calm as rumours swirl that the proposed Anioma State might have its capital moved out of the city. Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Honourable Johnson Erijo, the Governor dismissed the speculation, stressing that no one can arbitrarily redraw the political map without following Nigeria’s constitutional playbook.
Oborevwori made it clear that the creation of Anioma State — and the eventual choice of its capital — must go through rigorous procedures including memoranda, legislative scrutiny, and the consent of the people of Delta North.
Meanwhile, Delta North leaders are already speaking with one voice, advocating that the capital stays in Asaba.
Local government chairmen and regional stakeholders, after a decisive meeting, unanimously rejected any attempt — real or imagined — to shift the seat of power away from the historic city.
Reinforcing the message, community representative Mr. Chike Ifesiokwu reminded detractors that Asaba’s legacy, national relevance, and symbolic status are not up for negotiation. He reiterated the commitment of the Asaba people to peaceful engagements.
