The Delta State Government has called on Deltans to remain patriotic and support the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in its drive to improve the state’s economy.
The call was made by the State Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, during a special stakeholders’ meeting on the review of proposed amendments submitted by Ministries, Departments and Agencies to the Delta State Internal Revenue Service Consolidated Law, 2020. The meeting was held in Asaba, the state capital.
Chief Tilije said following the recent assent to the Appropriation Bill by Governor Oborevwori, the state had taken into cognizance the new tax law scheduled to come into force in January 2026.
He noted that the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) had not yet reached the expected level, stressing that the government was strengthening its revenue drive to ensure a self-sustaining economy.
The Commissioner acknowledged that taxation remains a global challenge, largely due to distrust in government, but emphasized that the Oborevwori administration had demonstrated transparency and commitment through ongoing infrastructural development across the state. He therefore appealed to Deltans to continue to support government policies.
In an interview, the Commissioner for Works, Rural Roads and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said the state government was reviewing its internal revenue sources to ensure that all revenue-generating and collection agencies operated optimally.
He explained that the aim was to prevent revenue leakages while also ensuring that citizens were not overtaxed.
On concerns about the proliferation of tax task forces on the roads, Mr. Aniagwu described the situation as an embarrassment to the state, adding that the government was working towards harmonizing taxes and introducing modern tax collection processes.
The meeting was attended by heads of various MDAs across the state, including the General Manager of the Delta Broadcasting Service, Asaba, Mrs. Kristen Emetulu.
