The Anambra State Police Command has a new Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has assumed duty with a pledge to strengthen security cooperation and sustain the fight against crime across the state.
Oji Ama formally took over the Command on Monday, August 10, 2026, following the exit of AIG Ikioye Orutugu, who was promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police before his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.
The new Commissioner brings more than three decades of policing experience to Anambra, with a career spanning intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations and strategic command.
Before his deployment to the state, Oji Ama served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja. He had previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same department.
A native of Ekata in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Oji Ama holds a B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Jos and joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Superintendent of Police after undergoing professional training at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
His previous postings include Deputy Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, FCID Abuja; Commanding Officer, 44 Police Mobile Force, Abuja; Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Homicide, FCID; and Commanding Officer of PMF formations in Calabar and Uyo.
He has also served as a Divisional Police Officer in the Federal Capital Territory and as Police Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Command, among other assignments.
Strategic Training
Oji Ama has undergone several professional and strategic courses in Nigeria and abroad, including the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru.
His training also includes joint operational planning with the British Military Advisory and Training Team, an Incident Site Commander’s Course conducted through the British High Commission College of Policing, tactical and strategic intelligence command and management, advanced detective training and combat operations courses.
His career has also attracted recognition for operational effectiveness. In 2007, he received a commendation for bravery and gallantry after recovering an AK-47 rifle during a shootout with armed robbery suspects in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
Security Partnerships
Speaking after assuming office, the new Commissioner pledged to build on existing security gains in Anambra through stronger collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders.
He specifically highlighted the importance of partnerships with traditional rulers, community leaders, youths, women and other critical stakeholders in tackling security challenges.
Oji Ama assured residents, visitors and members of the business community that the Command would remain committed to protecting lives and property, preventing and combating crime, upholding the rule of law and creating a safer environment for economic activity.
His assumption of office comes as Anambra continues to rely on sustained cooperation between security agencies and communities to consolidate peace and public safety.
With extensive experience in intelligence, investigation, tactical operations and strategic policing, CP Nnanna Oji Ama now takes charge of the Anambra Command with expectations of stronger community engagement and a more coordinated approach to security across the state.
