The Delta State Police Command has arrested a popular Asaba-based content creator, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as “Odogwu of Asaba,” over the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman who later died.
The arrest followed a petition alleging that the deceased travelled to Asaba on June 1, 2026, after the suspect allegedly invited her under the guise of offering training in content creation, a programme he reportedly promoted on his social media platforms.
According to the Delta State Police Command, the suspect allegedly took the young woman to a hotel upon her arrival in Asaba, where she was allegedly raped and physically assaulted.
Police said the victim later returned home in a distressed state and disclosed the alleged incident to her parents. She subsequently recorded a video detailing her experience and the emotional trauma she suffered following the alleged assault.
The Command further disclosed that the young woman later ingested a toxic substance in an apparent act of suicide and died despite efforts to save her.
Confirming the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, said Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi directed the Area Command in Effurun to immediately commence a thorough investigation upon receiving the petition.
“The Commissioner of Police directed the Area Command Effurun to carry out an immediate and thorough investigation into the allegations. Acting on the directive, operatives swiftly commenced investigation, leading to the arrest of Ifeanyi Ogbonna, also known as ‘Odogwu of Asaba’,” the statement said.
According to the police, the suspect has made useful statements during preliminary investigation, while detectives continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the case.
Commissioner Oyeniyi assured the family of the deceased and members of the public that the investigation would be thorough, impartial and professionally handled.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ensuring that no aspect of the allegations is overlooked and that appropriate legal action is taken in accordance with the law.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its course.
