Calabar, Cross River — The Cross River State Police Command has denied claims circulating online that it confirmed the deaths of two men in a machete attack in a local community.
In a statement issued Tuesday, and signed by ASP Sunday Eitokpah, MNISMA, Police Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command.
The Police said the report published by Sahara Reporters on January 20, 2026, was misleading, adding that no officer, including the Police Public Relations Officer, had been contacted or authorized to confirm the incident.
The Command noted that while informal reports suggested an incident may have occurred, official confirmation can only follow a formal report and preliminary investigation, neither of which had taken place at the time of publication.
“The assertion that the Police confirmed the incident is therefore misleading and incorrect,” the statement said.
The Police urged media organizations, online platforms, and bloggers to verify information through official channels before publication, to prevent the spread of misinformation and unnecessary public concern.
Members of the public with relevant information were encouraged to report to the nearest Police Station. The Command reassured residents that further updates will be provided as necessary, and reiterated its commitment to professionalism and responsible communication.
