Abuja, Nigeria — A leading Nigerian rights group has called on President Bola Tinubu to order an urgent investigation into allegations that more than ₦128 billion in public funds may have been diverted or gone missing from the Ministry of Power and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET).
In a statement released Monday, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) said the allegations are detailed in the Auditor-General’s annual report published on September 9, 2025. The group urged the president to direct the Attorney General of the Federation and anti-corruption agencies to probe the claims and prosecute anyone found culpable.
SERAP also called for the full recovery and remittance of any missing public funds to the national treasury, stressing that Nigerians continue to bear the cost of corruption in the power sector through persistent blackouts and failing transmission infrastructure.
The organization said accountability in the electricity sector is critical to improving access to reliable power in Africa’s most populous nation. The federal government has not yet publicly responded to the allegations.
