Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Thursday reaffirmed the state’s unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and the welfare of Nigeria’s veterans as activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day concluded in Asaba.
At the Cenotaph during a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, Governor Oborevwori paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s fallen heroes, describing their sacrifices as the foundation upon which the nation’s freedom and stability rest. He urged Nigerians to continually honour their memory by promoting patriotism, national cohesion, and support for serving and retired members of the Armed Forces.
The Governor, who was the Special Guest of Honour, was received with full military honours and inspected a guard of honour mounted by officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nigerian Legion.
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme; Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor; Chief Judge of the State, Justice Tessy Diai; Service Commanders of the Armed Forces; the Commissioner of Police; Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu; Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers and Orodje of Okpe, HRM Maj.-Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd.); members of the Nigerian Legion; and other top government officials.
A minute of silence was observed, followed by interfaith prayers offered by Christian and Muslim clerics for the repose of the fallen heroes, the welfare of veterans, and divine guidance for the nation.
Governor Oborevwori later led the laying of wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, after which ceremonial volleys were fired and white pigeons released, symbolising peace, hope, and renewal.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day remains a solemn national observance, reminding Nigerians of the price of freedom and the shared responsibility to sustain peace and unity across the country. NIM
