At least 36 people have been killed after a massive fire swept through multiple high-rise apartment blocks in a housing complex in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district, in what appears to be the city’s deadliest blaze in nearly 30 years. Seven of the complex’s eight towers — home to many elderly residents — remained ablaze hours after the fire began.
Firefighters reported extreme difficulty reaching residents trapped on upper floors. Authorities said 279 people were currently “uncontactable,” while 29 others were hospitalized, seven of them in critical condition.
The fire tore rapidly through bamboo scaffolding that encased the buildings for refurbishment — a common feature of construction in Hong Kong. Director of Fire Services Andy Yeung said crews also discovered polystyrene boards blocking windows in several units. “These polystyrene boards are extremely inflammable and the fire spread very rapidly,” he said, calling their presence “unusual” and referring the matter to police.
Hong Kong Police have arrested three men on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the disaster. A police spokesman said more details would be released at an upcoming press conference.
Chief Executive John Lee said the city’s housing authorities would investigate whether the protective materials used during the renovation were sufficiently fire-resistant. “We will hold those accountable in accordance with the laws and regulations,” he said.
A dedicated police task force has been assigned to probe the cause of the rapid spread of the fire as rescue operations continue.
