The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), South-South Zone, has condemned the alleged rape and tragic death of Miss Favour Agbro, a 20-year-old woman from Delta State, describing the incident as a horrific act of violence against women and a grave violation of human rights.
In a statement jointly signed by the Zonal Vice Chairperson, Comrade Stella Macaulay, and the Zonal Secretary, Comrade Eunice Emeyazia, the association expressed deep sadness over the incident and extended its condolences to the family of the deceased.
NAWOJ stated that if the allegations against the suspect are established in court, the act would amount to a serious assault on the dignity, safety and fundamental rights of women and girls, stressing that no woman should be subjected to sexual violence, coercion or abuse under any circumstance.
The association commended the Nigeria Police Force for arresting the suspect and urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial and timely investigation. It also called on prosecuting authorities to ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice in accordance with the law.
“Justice must be served, and due process must be allowed to take its full course,” the statement read.
NAWOJ further called on government agencies, civil society organisations, traditional and religious leaders, community stakeholders and the general public to strengthen efforts aimed at preventing sexual and gender-based violence through sustained public enlightenment, support for survivors and the effective enforcement of existing laws.
The association also encouraged survivors of sexual violence to report incidents to the appropriate authorities, assuring them that they deserve protection, dignity and access to justice.
Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of women and girls, NAWOJ South-South pledged to continue advocating for policies and actions that promote the safety, rights and well-being of women across the region and the country.
