The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has warned Nigerians to ignore a report circulating online claiming that the Commission has released the timetable for the 2027 General Elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, INEC described the report as false and misleading, stressing that it has not released any official timetable, schedule of activities or election dates for the 2027 polls.
According to the Commission, the document being shared online — which includes alleged election dates, campaign periods and party primary timelines — is completely fabricated and does not reflect INEC’s plans or position.
INEC urged Nigerians, political parties, civil society groups and other stakeholders to rely only on its official communication channels for credible information. These include its website, verified social media accounts and official press statements.
The Commission also noted that this is not the first time it has had to debunk such claims, recalling a similar clarification issued earlier this month.
Reacting to the development, the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, said the Commission operates strictly within the law. He referenced the Electoral Act, 2022, which requires INEC to publish a notice of election not later than 360 days before the date fixed for a general election.
Meanwhile, INEC says it has commenced the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the February 21 Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory.
Eligible voters are to collect their PVCs at their respective wards from January 22 to January 26, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily. Those unable to collect their cards during this period will be able to do so later at INEC Area Council offices across the FCT.
