The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, has vowed to immediately leverage the newly released 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) to activate early flood preparedness and other climate risk management measures nationwide.
Speaking at the public presentation of the SCP in Abuja on February 10, 2026, Umar commended the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) for the timely release of the forecast, describing it as a critical tool for strengthening Nigeria’s disaster risk reduction and climate resilience efforts.
She disclosed that NEMA will soon convene a technical meeting of experts to analyse the predictions in detail, producing actionable guidance for flood preparedness and mitigation strategies across the country.
The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, highlighted the importance of meteorological and climate services to national safety and development, noting that the 2026 SCP provides scientifically robust guidance for planning and risk management across key sectors.
Professor Charles Anosike, Director-General of NiMet, reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to delivering timely, accurate, and reliable climate information to support disaster preparedness and socio-economic development.
The release of the 2026 SCP underscores the Federal Government’s focus on proactive disaster management, aiming to mitigate climate-related risks before they escalate into emergencies.
