In recent times, Benue state, known as the food basket of the nation, has been under consistent attacks.
Suspected Fulani herdsmen heavily armed, have attacked different villages, settlements and farming communities in the state, killing, raping, or kidnapping and maiming at sight, even at midnight.
The attacks have since intensified this year, as according to reports, the attackers moved with precision, setting fire to homes and opening fire on those trying to flee.
The recent Yelewata killings, in particular, have triggered fresh calls for self defence and the declaration of a state of emergency in the region, and attracted wide concerns from individuals and groups across the country and the international community. While the
Amnesty International called on the Nigerian government to do more to stop attacks in Benue State, Pope Leo during a Sunday Angelus, particularly prayed for victims of conflicts in Nigeria and other African countries.
Many have blamed the killings on Ethnic, Historical and cultural differences in Benue State, persistent conflicts over Land ownership and access, Competition for resources, such as land, water, and grazing areas, weak security infrastructure and ineffective law enforcement as well as inadequate or ineffective Government policies and responses
This unabated massacre has impacted the region significantly, resulting in Loss of Lives, destruction of properties and livelihoods, Displacement of residents, social and psychological trauma, with heightened sense of fear among the local populace.
Although security agencies upon the directives of President Bola Tinubu, have swooped in to address the situation, citizens are wondering the cause of the late response by government and why the president is yet to declare a state of emergency in Benue State, given the way he responded to the Rivers state political crisis, which was far less threatening.
However, now that the security architecture of the country have been deployed to Benue state, many are watching to see if the issue would be addressed at the surface or from the root, The outcome of this intervention would go a long way in redefining the future of Benue State, impacting the little ray of hope Nigerians still have about their security and the confidence reposed in the giant of Africa by the international community.
Moreso, the killing spree is not just about the security of lives and properties in Benue State alone. It has dire consequences on every state in Nigeria. If such heinous crime is allowed to be committed in Benue State without a firm action and sanction, it will not augur well for the entire nation
Finally, across the nation, insecurity continues to thrive amidst rising economic crunch, with farmers finding it difficult to go to their farms: Yet, the food basket of the nation – where many hope lied is under siege. If that is not a recipe for an impending food crisis, then what is? A stitch in time they say saves nine.
