TOKYO — Japan has warned of a heightened risk of a powerful second earthquake within days after a 7.7 magnitude undersea quake struck off its northeast coast, triggering tsunami alerts and mass evacuations.
The quake, recorded at a depth of about 10km off Iwate prefecture, prompted authorities to order thousands of residents to move to higher ground amid fears of waves as high as 3 meters.

Prime Minister urged people in affected areas to remain vigilant and move to “higher, safer places,” warning that tsunami waves could strike repeatedly.
Japan lies along the seismically active and experiences around 1,500 earthquakes annually. The latest alert has revived memories of the devastating , which killed more than 18,000 people and triggered a nuclear meltdown at Fukushima.
Authorities say monitoring continues as the risk of further seismic activity remains elevated.
