The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised the alarm over the growing circulation of unregistered and potentially dangerous edible oils across Nigeria.
In a statement released Tuesday, the agency warned that several widely sold brands have no verified sources, production credentials, or safety standards. NAFDAC emphasized that the oils do not carry genuine manufacturer information or official NAFDAC registration numbers, making them a serious public health risk.
“These products are unregulated and could pose severe health hazards to unsuspecting consumers,” the agency said, urging Nigerians to exercise extreme caution.
According to NAFDAC, the adulterated oils have been smuggled into Nigeria and are being openly sold in major markets across the country, including Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, Warri, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Ikom, Calabar, Lagos, Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Yola, Gombe, Bauchi, Makurdi, and Lafia.
The agency called on the public to avoid purchasing these products and to report any suspected substandard or unregistered edible oils to the nearest NAFDAC office. The alert comes amid rising concerns over food safety and consumer protection in Nigeria, highlighting the dangers posed by unregulated imports and counterfeit goods.
