On this year’s World Disability Day, hope and joy illuminated faces at the Government House in Asaba, Delta State, as the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) extended a life-changing hand to Nigerians living with disabilities. In a remarkable show of social investment, 1.9 billion naira was rolled out to empower and include vulnerable citizens across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The event drew stakeholders and beneficiaries, many of whom described the support as a “blessing beyond words” and a beacon of possibility for the future.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, National Chairman of RHI and Nigeria’s First Lady, reminded the people that persons living with disabilities often face systemic barriers, and such initiatives helps to ensure no Nigerian is left behind. Speaking through Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, wife of the Delta State Governor and founder of the You Matter Charity Foundation, she emphasized that the programme reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to inclusive growth and empowerment for all.
For many beneficiaries, the support was not just financial—it was transformative. Each received 200,000 naira, and Mr. Daniel, who moves using both his hands and legs, was gifted a mobility aid, allowing him newfound freedom and dignity. The recipients in tears of gratitude and smiles of hope, described the gesture as life-changing, and an affirmation that society sees them and values their potential.
Mrs. Mary Erijo, Executive Assistant to the Governor on Women Development, praised the initiative, noting that it mirrors “the compassion and consistency of a mother dedicated to uplifting the vulnerable.”
