A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated early Wednesday at the Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa, prompting an emergency response from security agencies and temporary disruption of official activities.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:00 a.m., according to the Bayelsa State Police Command. Commissioner of Police CP Iyamah confirmed that no casualties were recorded and no property was damaged.
“The Bayelsa State Police Command wishes to inform the public of a suspected IED explosion that occurred today, 11 February 2026, at about 0600hrs within the State Secretariat Complex,” CP Iyamah said in a statement. “I immediately led the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Special Drone Unit, and other tactical teams to the scene. On arrival, operatives swiftly contained the explosion.”
Police said the area was cordoned off for detailed searches, during which one unexploded IED was discovered and safely rendered inoperative by EOD operatives. A 60-year-old man, identified as Pentecost Elijah from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, was arrested in connection with the incident and is undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department. Authorities said the suspect would be charged in court following the conclusion of investigations.
In response to the incident, the Bayelsa State Government ordered a temporary closure of work for four hours as a precautionary measure, affecting over 6,000 state employees. The directive was issued by the Head of Service, Dr. Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer.
Security operatives, including the anti-bomb squad, cordoned off access roads leading to the Secretariat and the Bayelsa State Government House while safety procedures were carried out. Authorities have stated that the situation is under full control and normalcy has been restored.
Members of the public have been advised to remain calm and continue with their lawful business activities.
