The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has announced that the Labour Party will commence nationwide congresses from March 2026, beginning from the ward level and culminating in a National Convention, as part of efforts to reposition and strengthen the party.
Governor Otti disclosed this while briefing journalists after chairing a joint meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Interim National Committee of the Labour Party in Abuja.

According to him, the party leadership also resolved to commence revalidation of membership and registration of new members, with a dedicated committee constituted to oversee the process. In addition, a reconciliation committee will be set up to welcome back aggrieved members willing to return to the party.
The Governor called on Barr. Julius Abure and his team to sheathe their swords and rejoin the party, while urging Nigerians who share the party’s ideals to enlist as members.
Governor Otti expressed appreciation to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for recognising the Interim National Committee and uploading the names of its leadership on the Commission’s website in compliance with a court order.
He noted that the party leadership regretted the exit of its former leader and presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, wished him well in his future endeavours, and stressed the need for unity to build a stronger political force.
While acknowledging that the party had lost some members, including National Assembly lawmakers elected on its platform and some caretaker committee officers who were replaced, Governor Otti maintained that the Labour Party remains strong, though it regretted its inability to participate as a party in the forthcoming FCT election.
The Governor thanked party supporters nationwide for their continued loyalty and assured them that the Labour Party would emerge stronger and more united going forward.
