The government of Delta State, Nigeria, has approved the recruitment of more than 700 medical and non-medical personnel in a decisive move to strengthen healthcare delivery and address critical workforce shortages.
Governor authorized the large-scale hiring as part of a broader strategy to align human resources with ongoing investments in health infrastructure across the state. Announcing the decision, Health Commissioner described the initiative as a “proactive and strategic intervention” aimed at sustaining service quality amid rising demand.
According to Onojaeme, the recruitment drive has been necessitated by recent upgrades and expansions within the state’s health system, including the elevation of General Hospital Warri to a central hospital and the near completion of a major Mother and Child Hospital in Ekpan. These developments, he noted, have significantly increased patient capacity and service expectations.
A breakdown of the recruitment plan shows that 295 personnel will be deployed under the Hospital Management Board, while 120 staff will be absorbed by the Delta State University Teaching Hospital. The newly established College of Health Technology in Ovrode will take in 100 עובדים, with additional placements allocated to Asaba Specialist Hospital (60 staff) and Warri Central Hospital (12 staff).
The commissioner emphasized that the initiative also serves as a direct response to the growing impact of healthcare worker migration—commonly referred to as the “Japa syndrome”—which has depleted skilled manpower across Nigeria’s health sector. He added that a standing government policy to replace exiting personnel has helped maintain operational continuity.
Beyond recruitment, the state is advancing key health system upgrades. A new State Public Health Laboratory is nearing completion, a development expected to elimipppppppppppppppppnsport diagnostic samples to Abuja, as was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, a psychiatric hospital currently under construction is set to further expand specialized care capacity.
In terms of medical technology, the government has procured three , featuring helium-free systems designed to reduce operational costs and maintenance complexity. Investments in dialysis services have also driven down treatment costs to approximately ₦45,000 in some facilities, with further reductions anticipated.
Onojaeme assured that the recruitment process will adhere to international best practices, emphasizing transparency, merit, and competitiveness. Positions will span a wide range of roles, including consultants, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, physiotherapists, technologists, administrative personnel, and support staff.
The initiative underscores Delta State’s commitment to strengthening healthcare systems, improving patient outcomes, and building resilience in the face of ongoing workforce and infrastructure challenges.
