The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has intensified calls for stronger collaboration between media practitioners and security agencies as part of efforts to promote national peace, improve public safety, and deepen inclusive governance in the country.
The appeal came during a courtesy visit by officials of the association to the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, CP Ahmed Mohammed, at the Police Command Headquarters in Abuja, ahead of the forthcoming Women in Security Summit and Awards (WINSEC) 2026.
Representing the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, the Chairperson of the WINSEC Contact and Mobilisation Sub-Committee and FCT NAWOJ Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita-Ikpang, described the planned summit as a strategic initiative designed to strengthen dialogue and partnerships among critical stakeholders in Nigeria’s security architecture.
According to her, the event, scheduled for June 30, 2026, is being organised by NAWOJ in partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), media organisations, and Crime Reporters Global Nigeria.
She explained that WINSEC—Women in Security Summit—is aimed at creating a platform for meaningful engagement on issues of peacebuilding, security, governance, gender inclusion, and leadership, while also recognising individuals and institutions that have contributed significantly to national stability.
Comrade Ita-Ikpang noted that women’s participation in security conversations remains crucial to achieving sustainable peace and development, stressing that the summit seeks to amplify their voices and contributions within the sector.
The NAWOJ leadership also commended the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the FCT Command under CP Ahmed Mohammed, for what it described as a professional and strategic approach to addressing security concerns in the nation’s capital.
She praised the police commissioner’s leadership style, saying it has continued to inspire public confidence and strengthen trust between residents and law enforcement agencies.
NAWOJ subsequently sought the support of the FCT Police Command to ensure adequate security and institutional backing for the successful hosting of the summit.
Responding, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohammed lauded the association for initiating a platform focused on security, peace, and national development, describing the summit as timely.
He assured the delegation of the command’s readiness to support the event, particularly through the provision of adequate security to guarantee a smooth and hitch-free outing for participants and guests expected in Abuja.
The police commissioner also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining collaboration with media organisations and supporting programmes capable of strengthening peace, security, and national cohesion.
The meeting ended with both parties expressing optimism about building a stronger working relationship between the media and security institutions in advancing national development.
